Guffey, Colorado may be the best experience of the trip thus far. I have always had a fascination with so-called "Colorado Ghost Towns". Guffey is snuggled in the mountains a mile off highway 9 (our route). Currently it seems there are about 35 residents. We stayed in a cabin that was called the bunk house. Bill, the proprietor, historic cabin restorer, welder, craftsman, and grumpy but friendly and generous host set us up for the night. He is a great guy, having sought out Guffey back when only 6 people lived in town. Now, he says too many live here, but he is still eager for conversation and to show off his adventure cycling certificate as one of the original stops on the bike-centennial trans-America trail. We are really glad an afternoon thunderstorm popped up and stopped us for the evening!
Guffey was also where Stephen saw his first hummingbirds! He looked out the window and said, " what the hell was that?" he thought they were huge bugs! They are pretty fantastic creatures and they seem to be most abundant in Colorado.
Anyways, we are in Fairplay in a fire station after a storm rolled in and sat over us and Breckenridge (breck to the locals) stalled our plans of making it over Hoosier pass. We will tackle that climb in the morning and then relish in natural food stores, vegan food, and hopefully some good local beer!

You're in South Park, so don't run over Kenny! I wish I'd known you were gonna go through Guffey...Kate Veihl and Susan Howard used to have a place there which we visited once a long time ago and I bet the guy knows them. Onward!!
